Man in the Mirror

March 8, 2010

True artists rise among others because of their determined vision, persistent action and irrevocable notion of believing that nothing is impossible.

Under that great inspiring statement, an occurrence that is still hard to believe played a sad joke on us last summer. What seemed impossible actually happened.

Michael Jackson, was a god on earth, creator of energy who transformed his mortality into an immortal through his music, and regardless his passing, he will be eternally alive. Why? Because he left a legacy, he inspired people.

His main message was that if you want to make a change happen, it must start within. He did it. He showed us. He proved it artistically.

He did what most will think was impossible; he invented the concept of perfection. And he was just like you and me.

Michael Jackson died on June 25th, 2009 eight days before his world tour comeback, after a long 10-year hiatus. He had three intense months preparing for his concert, non-stop rehearsals, his “This is It”. We, however, never got to see it.

I highly recommend to watch “This is it,” a documentary put together about the preparation for the series of concerts that sold more than 800,000 tickets and had more than 200,000 people in line to buy one more entrance to this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“This is it” is a compilation of side camera takes watching Michael, the crew, dancers and other musicians as they prepared for the show. It also captures MJ’s humbleness and love for humanity. This is it, like an ultimatum, it was.

The Clown in the circus might be you!

January 27, 2010

When you were a child, you might have had the opportunity to attend a circus. One’s perspective back then towards the show was of amazement and fantasy; the magic tricks, the clowns, that once were funny, the pink cotton candy and its sugary particles that dissolved in your mouth; the acrobats, the flying cannon girl, the lions, the elephants, the excitement that you felt watching the show, holding hands with your mom or dad as they sat next to you. Remember how you wished the clowns picked you to take you onto the stage and touch the animals, or how you clapped to the songs that the entertainers taught you, on site. Yeah! Those were the fun aspects of the circus: innocence, colorful and enjoyable performances. Well, why would you think any different now?

This past Monday, January 18th 2010, I had the opportunity to attend Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey, the “greatest show on earth” as their slogan claimed. Truth? I don’t have to be a skeptical to answer that. A stern NO!
Was I excited to go to the circus? Yes; did I have fun entering the arena, buying cotton candy (with no stick it can be used as a weapon nowadays), getting a program book and rushing to get my seat? Yes. Was it worth it? Yes. Why? Now I have relived my childhood and answered a few questions I had. Will I ever go back? NO!

The show:
Magic – Impressive (Cutting a man in half, disappearing elephants—Yes, I was in awe)
Clowns – Scary (They tried to make you laugh and were successful—I have to give them that—but you can’t remove their make up and big red foam nose that were notorious in horror movies from the ’80s. Okay, it might not be their fault.)
Entertainers – Annoying (Singing pop songs and repeating “don’t try this at home”—I’m sure there aren’t many households in America with a large cannon in its back yard, much less one in which a person can crawl inside and have someone fire them up.)
Costumes – Poor (The costumes the acrobats wore kept reminding me of the Cat in the Hat’s Thing 1 and Thing 2. Same plastic hair and red suits. Aren’t they supposed to be creative?)
Animals – Ridiculously ridiculed creatures! (A sad presentation of beautiful horses going around in circles, zebras repeating the same pattern for about 10 minutes, driving you dizzy; elephants holding the tail of their front companion, in line; tigers jumping off their hind legs, acting like dumb creatures, and dogs that saved the day jumping up and down, but still wearing pink tutus and ballerina dresses.)

The fact that we attend these kinds of shows were cruelty happens for our entertainment, is much more the spectacle. Is it really worth it to take your 3 year-old to see a this show while drinking a stale five-dollar Pepsi or a purchasing a lame 60-dollar souvenir?

Is it really entertaining to see a tiger brainwashed and ridden of its strong and powerful nature to be turned into a puppet jumping on pavement?

Do you want to watch an elephant sit down and up repeatedly for the comfort of your amusement?

The facts:

If you get annoyed with loud music, a shit load of colors, and a lot of people in the same enclosed space, think what this can do to an animal that has to repeat the same trick over and over again, in a place that do not look at all like their natural habitat. Mind you, the animals do not perform because of their extracurricular abilities or love of entertainment, they weren’t theater majors in college, they perform because they are scared to not do so.

Leaving the show, I was fortunate to find a slip of paper that said “Circuses are no fun for Animals” they shared with me some information that I will gladly help spread.

“The U.S Department of Agriculture has cited Ringling Bros repeatedly for violations including causing physical harm to animals, unsafe handling practices, insufficient and failure to maintain veterinary records.”

“Ringling paid $20,000 to settle USDA of failing to provide veterinary care to a baby elephant, who died after being forced to perform while sick. “

“After my three years working with elephants in the circus, I can tell you that they live in confinements, and they are beaten all the time when they don’t perform properly” Tom Rider, Former Ringling Bros. employee
